Now owned by Celia Jenkins.
This was Barbara Atkin’s club bike, the tailor-made frame purchased 18/12/1954.
Barbara was the secretary of Kingston Road Club immediately after the war, her husband Ken was the Chairman. Charlie Whitbourne (30m national record holder) and Cyril Peacock (later, world amateur sprint champion) were notable club members. Barbara is still the President of Central Sussex CC. I think they were among the founder members after moving away from Kingston.
(David Jenkins writes:) It is a wonderful bike and I know Barbara would be pleased to know its history etc is recorded. Ken kept the bike relatively up to date in that it is equipped with circa 1980’s gears and wheels but I would think the brakes, stem and bars are original. We have changed nothing apart from fitting Look pedals and these may be going back to toeclips.
Barbara did tell me something about the frame being made from a spare set of special Reynolds tubes that were produced for our national team, but unfortunately I know little more than that.
